What About the Dinosaurs?

And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.” … And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. Few questions spark more curiosity — or more debate — than the one connecting dinosaurs and Scripture. It sits at the crossroads of science and faith, ancient history and modern discovery, and it tends to make people uncomfortable no matter which side of the conversation they land on. But it is a question worth asking seriously, and the answer reveals something far more important than fossils ever could.

The Bible and the Big Creatures

The Bible does not use the word "dinosaur." That much is straightforward. But that does not mean Scripture is silent on the matter of enormous, fearsome creatures that defy easy explanation.

The Hebrew word tanniyn appears roughly thirty times in the Old Testament. It is variously translated as sea creature, serpent, or dragon, and by all accounts it refers to some kind of giant reptile. In the book of Job, God Himself describes a creature called Leviathan in remarkable detail — fire, smoke, terrifying strength, impenetrable scales. Whatever this creature was, it was not a goldfish.

Then there is Behemoth. God describes this creature to Job in chapter 40, verses 15 through 18, painting a picture of something massive, powerful, and built for raw endurance. The description includes a tail compared to a cedar tree. Hippopotamuses and elephants are the usual candidates offered by commentators, but neither of them has a tail that resembles a cedar tree. A large sauropod dinosaur like Brachiosaurus, on the other hand, fits that description remarkably well.

Could these passages be referring to dinosaurs? They could. The Bible does not give us enough direct information to say so with certainty, but the descriptions are striking enough that the question deserves an honest look.

Genesis and the Creation Account

Genesis 1:24-25 records God creating all land animals on the sixth day of creation. If Genesis 1 is taken as a literal, historical account, then dinosaurs — as land animals — would have been part of that creative act. They would have walked the earth alongside human beings, not millions of years before them.

This is where the conversation between science and faith gets complicated, and where sincere, thoughtful Christians have arrived at genuinely different conclusions.

Some hold firmly to a literal reading of Genesis. Six days means six days. God created everything, including dinosaurs, within that timeframe. From this perspective, the scientific community has misread or misinterpreted the fossil record, and carbon dating methods carry more uncertainty than they are typically given credit for. Creationists like Ken Ham and the team at Answers in Genesis argue that dinosaurs were created on day six alongside other land animals, survived on Noah's ark, and were eventually fossilized during and after the global flood. Their work is worth exploring for anyone who wants to dig deeper into that perspective.

Others take a different approach, reading Genesis 1 as poetic and theological rather than as a scientific or historical timeline. From this view, the six days of creation may represent six epochs — vast stretches of time — and both Scripture and science can be true within their own domains. Genesis answers the question of who created everything. Science explores the question of how the physical world developed. These are not necessarily competing answers to the same question; they may be complementary answers to different questions entirely.

What Ancient Civilizations Suggest

Here is something that does not get enough attention in this conversation: nearly every ancient civilization on earth has left behind artwork depicting giant reptilian creatures that bear a striking resemblance to dinosaurs. Rock carvings in South America show images resembling Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus Rex. Petroglyphs and clay figurines in North America carry similar shapes. Marco Polo, traveling through China in the thirteenth century, recorded an encounter with enormous serpents he described in vivid detail — creatures with short legs near the head, massive jaws capable of swallowing a man, and eyes larger than a loaf of bread.

These are not the imaginings of one isolated culture. They span continents and centuries. That kind of widespread, independent documentation raises a legitimate question about whether humans and large reptiles may have shared the earth far more recently than the standard evolutionary timeline suggests.

The More Important Conversation

Here is where the discussion needs to land, because it is easy to get so caught up in the debate that the most essential truth gets lost.

Science is not the enemy of faith, and faith is not the enemy of science. In fact, the more physicists and cosmologists study the complexity and precision of the universe, the more the evidence points toward intelligent design. The mathematical fine-tuning of the physical constants that make life possible, the irreducible complexity of biological systems, the staggering order embedded in everything from DNA to the movement of galaxies — none of it points toward a random, purposeless accident. It points toward a Creator.

And that is exactly what Genesis has been saying all along.

Whatever position one takes on the age of the earth, the nature of the six days of creation, or the fate of the dinosaurs, the central claim of Scripture stands firm: God created everything that has ever existed. He is not a distant architect who set things in motion and walked away. He is a personal God who made human beings in His image, who loves what He made, and who entered His own creation through Jesus Christ to make a way for broken people to be restored to relationship with Him.

The dinosaurs are a fascinating piece of the puzzle. The fossil record is worth studying. The debate between young-earth and old-earth perspectives is worth engaging honestly and humbly.

But the most important question is not how old the earth is or where exactly dinosaurs fit on a timeline. The most important question is whether you know the One who created it all — and whether you have responded to the love He has extended toward you.

That question will outlast every fossil ever discovered.
