Before Creation

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis 1:1 NIV)

There is a question that curious minds sometimes ask, the kind of question a child might ask at bedtime or a philosopher might wrestle with for a lifetime: What was happening before God created the world? What filled God’s time and His heart before He created everything?

It turns out, this is not a question to avoid. It is a question that, when pursued honestly through Scripture, leads to some of the most breathtaking truths in all of Christian faith.

Before the Beginning, There Was God

Genesis 1:1 opens with the words "In the beginning," but before that beginning, something — or rather, Someone — already existed. The living God who revealed Himself in Scripture is the sole, self-existent reality that preceded everything created. He was not formed. He was not caused. He simply exists.

When Moses asked God for His name at the burning bush, God's answer in Exodus 3:14 was staggering in its simplicity: God said to Moses that His name is “I AM.” He declared Himself to be the One who exists. Not the One who existed, or who will exist, but the One who simply and eternally is. As Paul reminded the people of Athens in Acts 17:28, “For in him we live and move and have our being.” Every breath, every heartbeat, every spinning galaxy owes its existence to God.

He is not bound by time because He created time itself. Psalm 90:2 declares, “from everlasting to everlasting you are God.” From everlasting to everlasting, God exists — entirely outside and beyond the boundaries of time as we know it. We tend to imagine the ages before creation as an enormous stretch of empty hours, as if God were sitting in a waiting room with nothing to do. But that framing misunderstands God entirely. He was not waiting for something to happen. He existed, and that was enough.

A Community of Perfect Love

Here is where the answer deepens in a way that should stop us in our tracks.

In John 17:24, Jesus speaks of the love the Father had for Him “before the foundation of the world.” And Genesis 1:2 reveals that the Holy Spirit was present and active at creation, hovering over the formless void. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit all precede creation. The triune God did not begin at Genesis 1:1. He was already there, already in relationship, already complete.

The Bible declares plainly that God is love. But if God is love, and nothing else existed before creation, then who did God love? The answer is as beautiful as it is profound: He experienced perfect love within Himself. The Father loved the Son and the Spirit. The Son loved the Father and the Spirit. The Spirit loved the Father and the Son. This was not a diminished or incomplete love. It was perfect, unconditional, overflowing love — the very same love we see displayed in the life of Jesus Christ.

This means God did not create humanity because He was lonely. He did not need us to feel complete. He was not lacking anything. The triune God existed as a full and perfect community of love before a single created thing came into being.

A Plan Already in Place

So why did God create anything at all?

Before that question is fully answered, there is something remarkable to consider. Ephesians 1:4 reveals that God chose us in Christ “before the creation of the world.” Before He spoke a single word of creation, before light pierced the darkness, God already had a plan for our redemption. He foreknew that humanity would sin, and He planned for our rescue before we ever needed rescuing.

Think about the weight of that truth. God knew exactly what He was getting into when He created us. He knew about every rebellion, every betrayal, every moment of human pride and failure. And He created us anyway — because the plan was already in place. The cost of that plan was staggering: the life of His own Son. And He counted it worth it before time began.

Created by Will, Not by Need

Revelation 4:11 gives us the clearest answer to why God created anything. “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.” All things were created by His will. Not by necessity. Not out of loneliness or lack. He created freely, sovereignly, joyfully — because He wanted to.

God created to expand His love beyond Himself. He created to freely display His glory and goodness. And in creation, His attributes are on full display: His power in the vastness of the cosmos, His wisdom in the intricate design of living things, His creativity in the staggering variety of mountains and waterfalls, sunsets and rainbows, plants and animals and people from every race and culture.

But it is in redemption that God's deepest attributes shine most brilliantly. His justice, His mercy, His grace, His patience, His relentless redeeming heart — none of these can be seen more clearly than at the cross. The glory of salvation surpasses even the glory of creation. What God planned before time began, He accomplished in history, and He will bring to completion in His eternal kingdom.

The Only Fitting Response

Understanding what existed before creation is not merely an intellectual exercise. It reshapes how we see ourselves and how we live.

We are created beings, entirely dependent on God for our existence and every breath we take. That reality calls us to profound humility and reverence. We did not create ourselves. We do not sustain ourselves. We exist because He wills it.

And because He who created all things is also the One who redeemed all things, we can rest in comfort and peace even in a chaotic world. He knew the end from before the beginning. He has never been surprised, never been caught off guard, never been without a plan.

The most fitting response to all of this is worship and trust. God created everything out of nothing. He gave us life and sustains every breath. He sent His Son to redeem us from sin and death. He invites us into the same community of love that existed before the world began.

Before creation, there was God — and that is more than enough.
