The Case for Christ

Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught. (Luke 1:1-4 NIV)

Have you ever wondered if the Jesus of the Bible was a real, historical person? In a world where skepticism runs rampant and ancient claims are constantly questioned, it's a fair question to ask. After all, we don't base our lives on myths or fairy tales. We need something solid, something real, something we can anchor our faith to with confidence.

The good news? The historical existence of Jesus Christ stands on firmer ground than almost any other figure from ancient history.

A Researcher's Careful Investigation

The Gospel of Luke opens with a fascinating declaration. Luke, a companion of the apostle Paul and a careful historian, makes it clear that he's not writing fiction or passing along rumors. He's conducting serious research. In Luke 1:1-4, he explains that he carefully investigated everything from the beginning so that his readers could know the certainty of the things you have been taught.

Think about that for a moment. Luke wasn't one of the original twelve disciples. He didn't walk the dusty roads of Galilee with Jesus. Yet the early church leaders recognized his meticulous research and adopted both his Gospel and the book of Acts as Scripture. Why? Because his work was credible, thorough, and reliable.

Luke addressed his writings to someone named Theophilus, whose name means "loved by God" or "friend of God." Whether Theophilus was a Roman official, a benefactor, or simply represents all God-loved people, the purpose remains crystal clear: to establish certainty about Jesus Christ.

Beyond the Bible: Non-Christian Historians Speak

Here's where it gets really interesting. We don't have to rely solely on Christian sources to establish that Jesus was a real person who lived, taught, and died in first-century Israel. Two prominent non-Christian historians provide independent confirmation.

Tacitus, the respected Roman historian and senator born around 56 AD, wrote about Jesus in his work Annals (116 AD). While explaining who the Christians were—a group being blamed for the great fire of Rome during Nero's reign—Tacitus noted that "Christus, from whom the name had its origin, suffered the extreme penalty during the reign of Tiberius at the hands of one of our procurators, Pontius Pilate."

This wasn't a Christian trying to prove a point. This was a Roman historian recording facts.

Josephus, the Jewish historian born around 37 AD, provides even more detail. As a general during the first Roman-Jewish war and a relative of the high priestly family, Josephus had access to reliable information. In his work Antiquities of the Jews, he mentions Jesus multiple times, including this passage: "Around this time lived Jesus, a wise man. For he was a worker of amazing deeds and was a teacher of people who gladly accept the truth. He won over both many Jews and many Greeks. Pilate, when he heard him accused by the leading men among us, condemned him to the cross, [but] those who had first loved him did not cease [doing so]. To this day, the tribe of Christians named after him has not disappeared."

Think about the weight of this testimony. A Jewish historian with no Christian agenda confirms that Jesus lived, performed remarkable deeds, taught people, attracted followers from both Jewish and Greek backgrounds, and was crucified under Pontius Pilate.

The Historical Standard

Here's something most people don't realize: to establish the historical existence of a person, historians need just one source from one author—either a supporter or opponent. For Jesus, we have twelve independent sources from five authors who were supporters, PLUS independent sources from Tacitus and Josephus who were non-supporters.

That's at least fourteen sources from at least seven authors. There is substantially more evidence for Jesus than for any other notable person in first-century Galilee. In fact, Jesus's historical existence is better established than that of Plato, Napoleon, Martin Luther, or George Washington.

Let that sink in. The next time someone suggests that Jesus was a myth or a made-up figure, you can confidently say that history itself proves otherwise.

From Historical Fact to Personal Truth

But here's where we move from the head to the heart. While historical evidence establishes that Jesus lived and died, it cannot prove that He was—and is—God in the flesh. That truth requires something more than academic research. It requires personal encounter.

James 2:19 offers a sobering reminder: "You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder." Mental assent isn't enough. Even demons know the facts about Jesus. They know He's God's Son. They know He died on the cross. They know God raised Him from the dead. And it doesn't change their lives one bit.

The difference between knowing about Jesus and knowing Jesus is the difference between reading about love and falling in love. It's the difference between studying peace and experiencing peace flooding your heart. It's the difference between believing historical facts and having those facts transform your entire existence.

Children are told they'll become different people as they grow through their teen years into adulthood. But they only truly believe it when they experience the change themselves. Similarly, we don't truly believe that Jesus is the Son of God until we make Him Lord and allow Him to change our lives.

The Three Levels of Existence

Life operates on three levels. There's pain and pleasure on the physical plane. There's enlightenment on the spiritual plane. But the most real level of existence is the reality of Jesus, the Living One.

This isn't about blind faith or wishful thinking. This is about encountering the risen Christ in a way that no historian can give you—and no historian can take away from you. When Jesus meets you personally, when He floods your heart with peace, when He proves over and over that He walks with you by faith, you have all the proof you need.

The Bottom Line

The existence and crucifixion of Jesus are historical facts. Don't let any skeptic convince you that Jesus is made up. His historical life is established beyond reasonable doubt.

But don't stop there. Open your heart and make Him your Lord. That's when you'll have all the proof you need that He is God's Son, your Savior, and your Lord. That's when historical fact becomes personal truth. That's when the case for Christ becomes the cause of Christ in your life.

The evidence is in. The verdict is clear. Now the question is: what will you do with Jesus?
